Sweet October.

I think as far as Henry is concerned, October is the best month that ever existed. October has been filled with Halloween festivities and so many fun things for us to do. He has really gotten into the spirit of Halloween this year and is so excited.

He thought he hit the toddler jackpot the night we took him to Ghouls at Grassmere for a little pre-Halloween candy collecting and an awesome hayride. We met up with our friends Jen, Michael and Sofie. They're a savage group.

Over the last few weeks we've seen Henry truly develop a friendship with our adorable little neighbor, Wilson. They look for each other in the afternoons so they can ride their bikes up and down the street together while their moms stand and chat.

On Friday I asked Henry "Is anyone going to turn three tomorrow?". That little hand shot up into the air so fast.

Henry has been so excited about his birthday this year. Will and I woke him up by singing Happy Birthday. That got a big smile. Even bigger smiles came when he opened his present from Uncle Andy and Auntie Cheryl.

This year we had a small celebration with our family and I think the birthday boy enjoyed every second of it. Especially since we fulfilled his one request- a Spiderman cake.

The funniest thing was that after we sang to him and he blew out the candles, he looked at me and said "Can I have some cake, Mommy?". I said "Of course you can buddy!". Next thing we knew he went mouth wide open toward the cake and just took a bite off the edge.

The kids always keep us entertained. The little kids and the big kids.

We were on serious Avenger overload that night. Some were more affected than others.

It's so hard to believe our big boy is three now. Three! I took Henry out tonight for a little photo session with him and some of his favorite things as a 3-year-old. I can't wait to share those photos with you soon!

My girl.

I mentioned in my last blog post that lately Henry has been what we nicely refer to as "challenging" lately. Cue the Terrible Threes. He's so much like the old nursery rhyme- when he is good, he is very, very good, but when he is bad he is horrid.

The last couple of days have been in the "very, very good" category. I tell Henry on (an apparently) regular basis "I love you, my boy." Twice in the last two days Henry has, out of the blue, said "I love you, my girl." with the sweetest little voice. I think he's trying to increase his chances of survival by being adorable :)

What has been adorable has been watching him get excited about all of the fall activities that seem to be happening left and right. A couple of weeks ago we took a little drive to Lucky Ladd Farms in Eagleville. It was by far the best "pumpkin patch" we've been to. We were there for about four hours but I think Henry would have stayed for four days.

They had a specific play area set up for toddlers. Henry went down the smaller slide they had set up in that area and then decided that just wouldn't do. I was a mix of both proud and terrified when he said that he wanted to go up this slide alone, not once but twice.

He loved leading the way in the corn maze.

But when it comes down to it, this part is always his favorite-

It was a big afternoon for both us, but one seemed especially worn out.

A couple of days later we all went out to some friends' house so I could do a maternity shoot. When Henry saw the camera's attention going elsewhere, he suddenly wanted in on the action. How could I say no?

He had a blast that night- esepcially since he got to hang out with our friends' son, Carson, and snagged a (slow) ride on his awesome go-cart!

So that's what we've been up to lately! Now it's time to get ready for a third birthday party! What??

Family days.

It seems nearly impossible that it's been almost a month since my last blog post. The days have really been flying by. Our calendar for the last few weeks has been full in a good kind of way.

One of the best days we had in October was a big Saturday family outing with the Pierce clan. For the last few months my dad has his heart set on going to Lake Winnepesaukah. I bet he mentioned it at least every other time I talked to him. So together all of us chose a Saturday and headed off to Lake Winnie- us, my mom, dad, brother, sister-in-law, niece, and nephew. How exciting! I love amusement parks. But it was not to be. The skies couldn't have been any more grey and the rain poured onto our windshields the entire drive.

My poor Dad was so disappointed. I think we all were. Luckily we'd been watching the forecast and had Plan B all figured out. We all had a great time, but the kids were blown away. It was so much fun to watch them.

In April of 2011 we took this family picture at the Chattanooga Aquarium in front of one of the mirrored walls.

Here's this year's picture. We are clearly missing the rambunctious toddler who was too busy with the fish for any photos.

We just couldn't resist taking the kids to the IMAX theater there. The film was terrible but we did find the world's largest stuffed snake in the gift shop.

Imagine my delight when we walked by a Ben & Jerry's shop on the way back to the car. Perfect end to the day.

Time with my family is always one of our favorites, so when Mom asked us all out for a Fall cookout/bonfire it was a welcome invitation. Henry always loves afternoons at Gaga and Pappy's with his cousins.

Will's first question when we pulled up at my parents' house was "Do you think the 4-wheeler is about?". So off we went, first thing, down the road and through the fields. We decided we'd try to find my brother's deer stand. We did find it- and then Will proceeded to do his best deer hunter imitation. My country boy.

My other boy has been really challenging lately. I've always heard "It's not the terrible twos, it's the terrible threes!" and now I understand. Up until this point Henry has been a pretty easy-going and agreeable kid. I'm not saying he didn't try to buck our system sometimes, but he generally did what we asked him to do. Well those days are but pleasant memories. Henry has figured out that he really has some opinions and he's not quiet about it. And with a couple of near-tantrums thrown in for good measure. He's also become particularly annoyed with my camera lately. I can't imagine why. Will clearly demonstrated from where Henry inherited his ability to dodge photos.

But as I've said before, luckily he mixes in enough adorable/sweet behavior to offset his toddler antics.

(The last photo above was taken on the day of Henry's very first school photo. Will laughed at how excited I got.)

Henry has been very curious and excited about Halloween this year. He notices that some of the houses have Halloween decorations and can't wait to wear his costume. We bought him a Halloween flashlight that he loves and he gets a big kick out of scaring us.

I think that's got me a bit more caught up on the blog! It won't be long before I'm blogging about a third birthday party. How is that even possible??
